2011 in review from Deus Bali

"When you look at the concept of one year strictly as a period of time passing, it seems pretty arbitrary. Our planet's complete orbit around the sun equals 365 day and nights, which leads us on a journey through 12 months and 52 weeks….or 52 weekends, whichever way you want to look at it.

Wherever in the world you are, once that clock strikes midnight on the 31st of December, we as the human race undertake a new embarkation into another arbitrary period of time. Yes, on paper and for general organizational purposes, 365 days is used to quantify 'one year'…but it's really what you accomplish, experience and change in that time that really means something isn't it?"

Mike Hynson, Co-Star of "The Endless Summer", Resurfaces With Tales of the Brotherhood

The Surfer Who Came In From the Cold
Whatever happened to The Endless Summer co-star Mike Hynson? A lot, much of it bad, starting when he got mixed up with the notorious Laguna Beach drug-smuggling ring known as the Brotherhood of Eternal Love.

The Soap Bar

After the 'Tracking' trip just a few months ago, Tyler Warren did his thing, spent some time in the confines of the shaping bay and left us (Deus) with a trio of foam-craft before his departure. Three 5 foot "Bars of Soap" now sit in our showroom racks, adding a bit of color and smooth Mini Simmons lines to the array on offer.

Insane Wood Work

Greg Wheeldon from Brisbane has been busy at it again. Lots of detail once again. Great to see the effort he puts into his boards.
" I finished a new 8’ Mal for myself, and pick it up from the glasser on Xmas Eve.  Once the sting goes from the cyclone swell, I will be christening the new board."
" The board is 8’ x 21 1/2 x 2 1/2, paulownia and western red cedar, with a woven bamboo feature panel in the nose and tail pads.  Glassed on fin with a checker pattern to match the deck detail."
"Another one for the quiver.  Hope to see you out at Currumbin over the Xmas New Year break."
"My son is finishing a 6’ retro pintail with a rising sun radial pattern in the nose.  I’ll send you photos, when complete."

DRAIN - A Dogbowl Short by Jake Janisse

DRAIN - A DOGBOWL SHORT directed by JAKE JANISSE from DRAIN - A DOGBOWL SHORT on Vimeo.
THIS HISTORIC 8MM FOOTAGE OF DOGTOWN'S FOUNDING MEMBERS, WAS CAPTURED IN THE SPRING OF 1977 BY WAYNE BABCOCK. WAYNE HAS NEVER RELEASED THIS FOOTAGE NOR HAS HE SHARED HIS VINTAGE DOGTOWN SKATEBOARD COLLECTION WITH THE PUBLIC, BOTH HAVE BEEN DONATED EXCLUSIVELY IN SUPPORT OF THIS PROJECt.

The Dog Bowl, originally known only to the most hardcore DogTown crew, was located in Northern Santa Monica - The Dogtown crew had their own pool that they could skate in peace. "Dino's Dog Bowl" was shortened to just "The Dog Bowl." A teenager with terminal cancer asked his father to drain the family pool on their huge estate overlooking The Brentwood Country Club Golf Course. Some of the most famous photographs in skateboarding were shot at the Dog Bowl. Tony Alva is credited with doing the first front side aerials at the pool in the fall of 1977. It was named "The Dog Bowl" because there were dogs always hanging out at the pool. On any given day over the summer of 1977 most of the entire DogTown crew were at the pool. Some of the best skating sessions EVER took place there.

40 years of the BONZER by Miguel Barreira

Drift Surfing just posted a great feature on the 40 years of the Bonzer. The article was an original idea of Portuguese photographer, Miguel Barreira, who also took the amazing photos that go with it. Miguel asked Malcolm to write down forty notable things, divided in four categories, to represent the forty years of the Bonzer.
The result is awesome, a genuine and personal view on the Bonzer and people involved.

You can read the feature HERE

The beautiful photos on the feature deserve a place of its own, so I'm posting them here so you can have a better view on them.

Great work Miguel!

Devon Howard testing 9'6" Tyler Surfboard

Devon Howard-X-Tyler Hatzikian from The Wave Journal on Vimeo.
This is Devon Howard at Old Man's test piloting a custom 9'6" "Tyler Surfboards" shaped by Tyler Hatzikian in El Segundo, CA. Devon is fascinated by the Australian design period of 66/67. See Paul Witzig's film "Hot Generation" for a better understanding of the super refined longboard designs and surfing happening at that time. The fin is a 10' Flex Greenough template  made of Volan cloth by Larry Allison. The wide point is back, and the mid point runs narrower than most logs at 22". Devon and Tyler will keep working on refining this design. More to come soon...

Tyler Warren x Zac Baillie by Korduroy TV

A Korduroy TV photographic collection curated by Ryan Tatar.

Words & Photos Zac Baillie

http://zacbailliephoto.blogspot.com/

"I met Tyler whilst he was the artist/shaper in residence at the DEUS ‘TEMPLE OF ENTHUSIASM’ in Canggu, Bali where I live. He had just returned from a trip to some other islands with Dunc Macfarlane who was kind enough to share his guy. Haha. Tyler is a renaissance man in the truest sense, and a rounded man be he painting, surfing, shaping, (beer drinking haha). Tyler puts the same passion into all these, and does it with a flair and humble demeanor that belies his talents and the years of work he’s put into his craft(s). To watch him shaping this board, nicknamed ‘Bali Soap,’ all by eye and feel, no templates, just passion and experience, was quite eye opening for me and was a nice way to spend a few days, especially shooting him on medium format 120 film."
