Foam Day

[LORNE] Foam Day from Alexander Cleland on Vimeo.
5th June, 2012: We gathered for the morning surf check at Lorne Point, then my mates Jack and Moona suggested we hit north Lorne to see if the conditions were right for "Foam Day". The stunning display occurred thanks to the raw swell agitating the water, strong southeasterly winds and over 150 millimetres of rain washing down a large amount of organic material into the turbid waters of Louttit Bay. We only get to observe this phenomenon every few years, and this was the most impressive we had seen so it was a easy choice to wettie up and get the cameras out. I'd like to credit Jack's rad camera skills for the pioneering concept of "foam tunnel" vision that was captured.

Track is "Sail" by Ash Grunwald (originally by Awolnation) from the album "Trouble's Door" (2012).

hope you enjoy.

Artist: BEST COAST
Song: WHEN IM WITH YOU

"Tyson Kozuszek is a young, creative surfer who blends his expressions through wave riding, music, and design. His positive mindset and overall stoke are inspiring and when he reached out to us to check out some of his work, we decided we needed to dig in a bit deeper to see everything he is up to. What we uncovered is that he is a big promoter of being resourceful to do the things you want in life. There's a lot at our fingertips. Sometimes we just have to think outside the box."

Find The Glide by Matt Pearson

Matt Pearson contact me to publish some information about is project - THE GLIDE.
Enjoy!!!

THE GLIDE

"Most surfers can probably remember back to the time when they caught their first ride on the unbroken face of a wave, and almost certainly can all recall that first stoke inducing feeling. This is THE GLIDE.

As time goes on, though, and we seemingly progress as surfers, things tend to get a little more complicated.

Influences ranging from fellow surfers at the beach to pro-surfers, and the surfing industry may have affected our attitude and side-track us into ways of surfing which has made us lose touch with the simple pleasure that we seek - that of effortlessly gliding along a wave. I have seen how riding equipment not designed for local conditions (e.g. trying to surf on boards with elf-shoe rocker in the gutless British surf) just leads to frustration and a sense of failure.

Taking inspiration from shapers and surfers such as Bob Simmons, Richard Kenvin, Joel Tudor and many more modern cutting edge shapers, I have tried to reach a happy medium between classic speed and critical turning capability, enabling the rider to engage with The Glide, whilst pushing the limits of performance.

Handcrafted
Although beautiful and environmentally friendly, wooden surfboards in the past have not given the same performance characteristics as the modern foam and fibreglass surfboard. They were heavier and stiffer which had an adverse effect on performance.

After extensive experimentation and testing I have designed a wooden board, using only natural materials, that overcomes these two negative traits. My boards are as light and as flexible as the synthetic foam and fibreglass boards.

The paulownia wood and the loofah that is used in the construction is made up of the cellulose fibres, the only difference being the density of the fibres. Mimicking the foam and fibreglass construction, low density loofah is used on the inside of the board as a lightweight, but incredibly strong load-bearing material. The combination of loofah and the more dense paulownia wood outer shell creates a solid , yet light, entirely cellulose, natural structure.

Cross Grain flex
After achieving the task of making the boards light, it was still apparent when riding them that, though being very fast, they lacked the lively feeling of a foam board, due to the lack of flex. Having the right balance between stiffness and flexibility is of course vital in producing a board and that is fast but also responsive.

I found the perfect solution by taking into account the natural characteristics of wood in relation to grain and flex. Wood naturally flexes more across the grain than along it. I kept the front 2/3rds of the board with the grain running lengthways but achieved the flexibility I was looking for by routing out the wood in the tail area and replacing it with crosswise running grain.

Eco-friendly
By combining all of these features, I have achieved my aim to produce an eco-friendly surfboard which is as light and as flexible as a foam and fibreglass one, that gives you a perfect ride without the bummer of toxic materials on your conscience."

+THE SEA OF POSSIBILITY+ JACK LYNCH

+THE SEA OF POSSIBILITY+ JACK LYNCH from Nicholas Damen on Vimeo.
The Sea of Possibility.

"I fly in on the last flight to the Island Tasmania, that heart shape landmass that if drawn incorrectly in primary school just made your map of Australia look really average. Its cold, 6 degrees cold, for me that is pretty cold, for girls hitting downtown Hobart though, it appeared that it wasn’t too chilly at all.

We trek down a beaten dirt farm track, as we break the hill the sea comes into view. It’s a point swell. Job on, the water is cold, feet numbing cold. The locals are welcoming; don’t know how they strip down on the rocks in the cold though.

Still undecided if Tasmanians have Internet, refreshingly though, no one knows that Reynolds has a new neck beard out this season. There are no neck beards here, just full beards on Men, Men that withstand the cold, year in year out to surf the Point Swells. No Loggers either with trailing bat tails, but in there place on the Points a surprising number of bodyboarders.

The swell lasted a day. A venture through a leech-infested Tasmanian National Park the following day provided no more possibilities for another surf. So my time was up on the apple isle, an early flight out the next morning brought my impromptu surf mission to an end. I came to the conclusion that Tasmania holds a sea of possibility and I will be returning, perhaps in the summer time."

SURFED.AT

What is Surfed.at?

Surfed.at is a growing directory of thousands of surf spots around the world. It lets you discover new places to surf, record and rate the places you want to try.

What’s up with the spot ratings?

To help you find the world’s awesomest surf spots, the rating of each spot takes a few things in to consideration. The first thing is pretty obvious, the rating that you the user gives it. So no spot will be given a good rating if people think its crap. Now, there is one thing we all hate more than anything, and that is crowds. So when more people add a spot, the spot’s ranking goes down because it’s being spoilt by crowds. This is calculated like a bell curve, so a spot gets a better score as people add it but when a certain amount people has added it, the score starts to diminish. Make sense?

The third thing that influences a score is a bit trickier, it is the remoteness of the spot. We reckon a spot with a good ranking that is far removed from another spot and has few people that has surfed there is going to be one of those fairy tale spots that we all dream about surfing. That is why you’ll see places like Teahupo ranking really well.

Now how about my ranking?

As you add your surf spots, you inherit the points from the spot.
