KASM & S4C COASTAL JOURNEY | PART 1

KASM & S4C COASTAL JOURNEY - PART 1 from Surfers for Cetaceans on Vimeo.
To help visit: www.kasm.org.nz www.s4cglobal.org

In support of KASM (Kiwis Against Seabed Mining), pro surfer & activist David Rastovich, intends to paddle 350km from Taranaki to Piha west of Auckland, New Zealand over two-weeks beginning Nov16th to draw awareness to issues to do with proposed seabed mining.

Rastovich, a co-founder of global group "Surfers for Cetaceans" (S4C), will unite with KASM advocates to engage local communities, educate and inspire others to action throughout the epic journey.

Threats:

- The entire west coast from Whanganui to Cape Reinga is under either a prospecting or exploration permit to mine iron sands from the seafloor.

- Large scale seabed mining, as is proposed, will leave massive oceanic dead zones, could ruin fisheries, affect surf breaks, exacerbate existing erosion problems, change beaches and reintroduce toxins which are currently stabilized in the sea floor.

- Foreign owned mining companies are looking to extract billions of tonnes of iron sands for export to Asia and pay just 1-5% of the value of the resource in royalties to the NZ Govt.

- Very few jobs would be created for coastal residents as operations are entirely water based.

- Much of the permitted area is a direct overlay of the only habitat for the critically endangered Maui's Dolphin. With just 55 dolphins remaining, seabed mining would make extinction of the species a certainty.

Copy Cat by Jim Phillips

A tribute to Greg Noll and Mickey Dora that’s meant to be ridden. The outline of the board is pure 60’s with a pulled in nose and hips back of center. The board features 50/50 rails from nose to tail with the famous long step/hump deck accented by a slight chine to the deck rail. The bottom contours are very simple giving this board nice drive and projection out of turns and a clean trim spot about center. Go clean, clear volan or throw some pigment on it – either way grab your trunks and a bar of wax.

- Materials: US Blanks or Blair Polyurethane Foam.
- Stringer Configuration: 3/8” cedar is standard
- Fin: Malibu Classic if you’d like or Miss Lucy

9'6 Trimulux from Bing

Picking up a custom 9'6 Trimulux from Bing Surfboards, May 2012 from robin york on Vimeo.
This video tells the story of CA based surfer Robin York, from Munich, Germany ordering his first custom single fin from Bing Surfboards, a legendary CA shaping label. The video offers a short interview with Matt Calvani, the Head Shaper at Bing Surfboards, and a look into Matt's shaping bay as he talks through the board's design. Notice the nod to Robin's Bavarian roots in the detailed Bavarian flag airbrush on the underside of the deck!
The film is shot and edited by Kay Madsen, a German surfer, cinematographer and editor also based in LA.

Thanks so much, Kay Madsen, for all the help in filming and editing this short portrait. You're a hero! And a huge thanks to Margaret Yao Calvani, General Manager at Bing Surfboards for inviting us down, to Kyle Chambers for his awesome photos and of course, to Matt Calvani for the incredible board you made me!

Yuta Sezutsu | InnerViews by Korduroy Tv

Yuta Sezutsu - InnerViews from www.KORDUROY.tv on Vimeo.
Not many people are aware of the lasting devastation and precarious state of Japan's Fukashima Nuclear Plant because the country's officials have been tight-lipped since last year's devastating tsunami. Japanese surfers are often left wondering if the act of surfing is causing them to irreversible harm.

Residing in the surf town Kamakura, Japan near Tokyo, Yuta Sezutsu is perhaps Japan's best longboarder for his age. Quietly sliding down points and reefs around the world, Yuta has made a name for himself in the international longboard community and possesses one the most refined longboard styles we've ever seen. In this episode of Inner-Views presented by VSTR, Yuta talks to us about living with radiation and the changing state of Japanese surf culture.

The Waxhead made the journey from his residing home in Sydney to spend some time designing a few new surfboards with Bob Mctavish. The board in question here is a new creation which borrows its template off one of Bobs personal boards from 1966.

Slightly longer and sleeker at 9'5 x 22 1/2" with less hip than the typical involvement style boards, it suited the hollow waist high peelers that The Pass had to offer.

About JUAN GIRIBER

For the teaser we picked Juan Giriber, whom we met in Spring 2012. His age is not exactly known, but way over 70 he is still stoked about surfing as much as then when he and some friends saw the first pictures of a guy riding a wave in the 1960s. Being one of the first surfers in Spain then, he not only discovered many surfable beaches which are now well known to the surfing community - he also grew famous in Spain to supposedly be the inventor of "el invento" (in English: the invention), in the rest of the world simply called "the leash".
