An avid bodysurfer throughout, he's amassed decades of knowledge about the sport. To top it off, he's a passionate gardener who uses kelp to fertilize his fruit trees (watch the video to learn how). Legendary, to say the least.

The Boardroom convention is an event dedicated to the surfboard and those who build them. The Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters shape off is an invite only contest where shapers are asked to reshape a board of the past from a Master Shaper. This year at the Orange County event a Terry Martin longboard was the board that needed to be replicated. Donated by Royce Cansler, the 9'6" Legacy surfboard is one of many masterpieces created by the late great Terry Martin.

A big thanks goes out to Rick Starick for helping me with advice for this video. I also want to say thanks to the Bing family (Matt & Margaret Calvani, Bing Copeland, Royce Cansler and Adam Cap) for making me feel at home and for working with me on this video. Enjoy.

A collaboration between The Shop Next Door and Brett Caller. Brett was sent some surfboards from The Shop Next Door which he then went and rode. This was his first surf on a Chris Christenson log at a local point break.

This particular Christenson shape is called the "Dead Sled" which is a perfect log for both beach and point breaks. The "Dead Sled" is an ideal all around log because of the parallel outline and the rolled vee in the tail for easy rail to rail transition on the wave. With this shape the 50/50 rails are slightly pinched throughout the board and the generous concave in the nose also enhance the perfect amount of lift whilst poised on the nose. All the while the boards reverse rocker will help continue forward trim but it will still stay buried in the curl for major tip time.

The first section of a two part series...

living on the popular Northern Beaches these days limits you in terms of wave variety with wind and swell lacking to aline frequently & large crowds surfing the limited waves make for frustrating sessions. Myself, good friend Carl Gonsalves and his girlfriend Anna, headed south to a place that I had been to once, not traditionally known as a longboarding wave, more for bodyboarders... We left early and made our way to the Coal Coast, after driving for a few hours and numerous stops we reached the somewhat empty, typical American suburban community, every house resembling the one next to it, we drove through national parks and stumbled down muddy tracks, perfect waves awaited, the sun was out, the water crystal clear and next to nobody out...

What you see here was what we found and surfed that day for a few hours.. quick sections, stalls, nose rides, bottom turns and head dips...
