"Gastrologging" is an audiovisual project that encompasses two pleasure-evoking concepts: gastronomy and logging. We have carefully selected attractive places from which to film surfing and each clip is preceded by a culturally relevant gastronomic introduction. In this way, we aim to balance the importance of the surfing images with respect to the cultural character that each spot carries.

The Drifter

Hurley and Warner Bros. Records are teaming up to release the much-anticipated autobiographical surf movie about Rob Machado, The Drifter. The film will have a limited theatrical release and will also be available on DVD. The Drifter is directed by Poor Specimen's Taylor Steele. Word on the street is that The Drifter was shot entirely in high-definition.

Rob Machado and Taylor Steele spent over six months in Indonesia collecting footage for the film. As Indo is home to some of the world's greatest waves, it is not far-flung to believe that the world's most famous soul surfer had the surf trip of a lifetime. But the movie goes beyond that, The Drifter also documents Rob's search for life's deeper meaning. The surf trip ends up taking him on a soul-searching journey where he eventually finds himself in Indonesia's outermost reaches with nothing but a surfboard, his journal and a tent. Machado's conclusion after scoring more perfect waves than any surfer could ever wish for? There's always a new dream to chase.

Much of the dialogue in The Drifter is taken from Rob's own personal journals. According to respected surf journalist Nathan Myers, who co-wrote the movie, there is nothing embellished in Rob's candid, heart-felt passages. It is these passages, in fact, that drive the movie, from Rob's epiphany in Bali, to his ill-fated motorcycle purchase, to his decision to delay his return to California, blindly pick a new island on the map, and just go.

Alex Knost at Lowers

Alex Knost from Gage Hingeley on Vimeo.
Was up at Lowers and happen to see Alex surfing and I figured I would shoot a few clips of him surfing. I ended up making an edit out of it and hear it is. I wanted to do something really weird so I added some 16mm painted film effect to the whole thing. Some will like it but some will not like it at all. I hope you are the one who will enjoy it!

The Chip by Josh Oldenburg

Josh - "At the beginning of summer I had the pleasure of creating a modern Chip. The Chip originated in the late 50's and is often time considered the precursor to many of the early pig designs that largely dominated the first half of the 1960's. This particular board has a flat rocker that is complimented by a soft rolled bottom, a combination that makes for an extremely fast board in trim."

Desillusion Magazine | Benjamin Jean Jean

Desillusion Magazine X Benjamin Jean Jean from Desillusion Magazine on Vimeo.
Desillusion magazine teamed up with Benjamin JeanJean, a French artist who's into just about everything ( Photography - Drawing - Design ) and who is surrounded by an extremely dreamlike and mystical world. This association gave way to the creation of a highly atypical surfboard.

Inspired by the mag's motto "Death of cool', Benjamin Jean Jean created more than fifty illustrations, each one unique, and then shaped the whole thing himself, which in turn is more than just a board, it’s plain art. The board was shown at an exhibition, last month in Biarritz, France.

Red Ekstrom by Hydrodynamica

"Asymmetric design by Carl Ekstrom. The bamboo fins, the shape, the glassing...everything... done by Carl, by hand, in his garage and workshop. Hard to put a price on something like this, but I reckon its very valuable."

Photographed by Ryan Field in the Hydrodynamica studio, March 2012.
