THIS IS ALEX | TOME 4

THIS IS ALEX -TOME 4 from Desillusion Magazine on Vimeo.
Desillusion magazine, supported by RVCA and RAEN are proud to present their latest video “This is Alex”, a video portrait that pays tribute to the Californian longboarder/musician Alex Knost.

Hailing from Costa Mesa, California, Alex Knost certainly stands out of the crowd; a worthy heir to a surf culture that's made up of pioneers, and numerous creative artists. After having followed in the footsteps of his spiritual big brother, Joel Tudor, Alex became in turn one of the best longboarders in the world, paddling his way to the front of the scene, in a counter culture that we thought was drowning under the waves of an extremely lucrative economy- surf industry. Almost uncatchable, the man flits like a butterfly from one art to the next (from photography to video, board shapes to music) trying to, like he says "lose himself in anything he does, hoping to exceed the limits that society has set him".

A slightly tormented soul, maybe a bit too realistic for this world, although the two obviously go hand in hand, "This is Alex "is a total immersion in his everyday life, a celebration of raw counter culture: To give, understand, learn and influence, without waiting for anything in return, if not to perpetuate a style and a philosophy of life.

THIS IS DYLAN | TOME 5

THIS IS DYLAN - TOME 5 from Desillusion Magazine on Vimeo.
Desillusion magazine, supported by ANALOG and ALIEN WORKSHOP are proud to present their latest video “This is Dylan”, a video portrait that pays tribute to the stylish Californian skateboarder , Dylan Rieder.

At only 24, Dylan's name is already well engraved in the history of skateboarding, thanks to his style, his personality and his incredible gift; that of skating fast and skating well. The skateboard mag voted him as 2006's years best am award, but since then he turned pro, came out with an insane part in Mind Field, and has been blowing minds with his steezy tricks all across the world. After a rather tormented period, where he tasted the dark side of street life, and where he found himself literally catapulted to the front of the scene, Dylan got back up again, brushed himself off and with incredible maturity, imposed his own style, a style which quickly turned him into an icon for an entire generation of skateboarders.
With the extremely stylish Jason Dill for mentor, and Mark Oblow as a teacher, nothing seems to be able to resist the boy. Design, fashion, skateboarding, everything he touches seems to turn to gold, a privilege which has allowed him to stay true to himself and to his beliefs, whatever the cost, giving him the priceless freedom of being able to simply say 'no'. Interviews, huge contracts, photoshoots, Dylan takes care of every part of his career, of his image, his lifestyle, making him one of the most atypical skaters of the new generation.

Quiet, discrete, with an irresistible aura that characterizes the legends of our subculture,“This is Dylan” is a total immersion in his everyday life, a celebration of raw counter culture: when aesthetics and style become much more than just a clever marketing strategy to seduce the largest number of kids, when the sun and streets of California come together to give us their utmost best.

After the great success of “This is Trouble”, a short movie portraying the life of snowboarder and musician Trevor “Trouble” Andrew that was launched last February (vimeo.com/desillusion/thisistrouble), the second, a tribute to Andrew Reynolds “ This is Andrew” ( vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisandrew ) , the third "This is Ozzie”, a dedication to one of the most influential inspirations of the board culture scene, Ozzie Wright (vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisozzie ), and the fourth opus on Hippie longboarder Alex Knost ( vimeo.com/desillusion/thisisalex ), Desillusion is proud to present the fifth opus of the " THIS IS" saga , with Dylan rieder as guest host, a strong personality who's always inspired Desillusion's world with his particular sense of aesthetic.

The video comes with the latest issue of Desillusion magazine featuring Dylan Rieder as their exclusive guest editor, available on dslmag.com/v5/shop.php

Sapporo Moped Creation

Sapporo Moped Creation from Rob Brooks on Vimeo.
I had the chance to go visit the Moto-Matic guys last month. Took along my 60d and hung out with Mike and Nate for a couple days as they were building the Sapporo Mopeds.

They were also kind enough to set me up with a 70 mph moped while I was there. Soaked up some California sun and rolled with the Land Squids for a few days. Not a bad gig!

Thanks to Sapporo for embracing creativity and subculture. 25 of these custom mopeds are being created. You also have the chance to win your own.

Visit facebook.com/sapporousa to win this in a photo contest. Begining May 30. Launches This Monday!

American Dream

American Dream from Ian Ruhter : Alchemist on Vimeo.
The American Dream video is based on the fear of success, this thought is extremely powerful, fear has the ability to cripple us from pursuing our dreams. The moment I embraced my dreams it was as if the universe had drawn people to help us and share their stories. Our goal is to tell the stories of the people who live in America. Your support is the driving force behind our project. We could not have done this without you. We have made it this far because you shared and supported us through our social networking sites. We were able to connect with the people in this film because of the internet. Every time you share or like this project it brings us one step closer to photographing your town, people you know, possibly even you.

KASM & S4C COASTAL JOURNEY | PART 1

KASM & S4C COASTAL JOURNEY - PART 1 from Surfers for Cetaceans on Vimeo.
To help visit: www.kasm.org.nz www.s4cglobal.org

In support of KASM (Kiwis Against Seabed Mining), pro surfer & activist David Rastovich, intends to paddle 350km from Taranaki to Piha west of Auckland, New Zealand over two-weeks beginning Nov16th to draw awareness to issues to do with proposed seabed mining.

Rastovich, a co-founder of global group "Surfers for Cetaceans" (S4C), will unite with KASM advocates to engage local communities, educate and inspire others to action throughout the epic journey.

Threats:

- The entire west coast from Whanganui to Cape Reinga is under either a prospecting or exploration permit to mine iron sands from the seafloor.

- Large scale seabed mining, as is proposed, will leave massive oceanic dead zones, could ruin fisheries, affect surf breaks, exacerbate existing erosion problems, change beaches and reintroduce toxins which are currently stabilized in the sea floor.

- Foreign owned mining companies are looking to extract billions of tonnes of iron sands for export to Asia and pay just 1-5% of the value of the resource in royalties to the NZ Govt.

- Very few jobs would be created for coastal residents as operations are entirely water based.

- Much of the permitted area is a direct overlay of the only habitat for the critically endangered Maui's Dolphin. With just 55 dolphins remaining, seabed mining would make extinction of the species a certainty.

Copy Cat by Jim Phillips

A tribute to Greg Noll and Mickey Dora that’s meant to be ridden. The outline of the board is pure 60’s with a pulled in nose and hips back of center. The board features 50/50 rails from nose to tail with the famous long step/hump deck accented by a slight chine to the deck rail. The bottom contours are very simple giving this board nice drive and projection out of turns and a clean trim spot about center. Go clean, clear volan or throw some pigment on it – either way grab your trunks and a bar of wax.

- Materials: US Blanks or Blair Polyurethane Foam.
- Stringer Configuration: 3/8” cedar is standard
- Fin: Malibu Classic if you’d like or Miss Lucy

9'6 Trimulux from Bing

Picking up a custom 9'6 Trimulux from Bing Surfboards, May 2012 from robin york on Vimeo.
This video tells the story of CA based surfer Robin York, from Munich, Germany ordering his first custom single fin from Bing Surfboards, a legendary CA shaping label. The video offers a short interview with Matt Calvani, the Head Shaper at Bing Surfboards, and a look into Matt's shaping bay as he talks through the board's design. Notice the nod to Robin's Bavarian roots in the detailed Bavarian flag airbrush on the underside of the deck!
The film is shot and edited by Kay Madsen, a German surfer, cinematographer and editor also based in LA.

Thanks so much, Kay Madsen, for all the help in filming and editing this short portrait. You're a hero! And a huge thanks to Margaret Yao Calvani, General Manager at Bing Surfboards for inviting us down, to Kyle Chambers for his awesome photos and of course, to Matt Calvani for the incredible board you made me!

Yuta Sezutsu | InnerViews by Korduroy Tv

Yuta Sezutsu - InnerViews from www.KORDUROY.tv on Vimeo.
Not many people are aware of the lasting devastation and precarious state of Japan's Fukashima Nuclear Plant because the country's officials have been tight-lipped since last year's devastating tsunami. Japanese surfers are often left wondering if the act of surfing is causing them to irreversible harm.

Residing in the surf town Kamakura, Japan near Tokyo, Yuta Sezutsu is perhaps Japan's best longboarder for his age. Quietly sliding down points and reefs around the world, Yuta has made a name for himself in the international longboard community and possesses one the most refined longboard styles we've ever seen. In this episode of Inner-Views presented by VSTR, Yuta talks to us about living with radiation and the changing state of Japanese surf culture.

Matt Chojnacki

The Waxhead made the journey from his residing home in Sydney to spend some time designing a few new surfboards with Bob Mctavish. The board in question here is a new creation which borrows its template off one of Bobs personal boards from 1966.

Slightly longer and sleeker at 9'5 x 22 1/2" with less hip than the typical involvement style boards, it suited the hollow waist high peelers that The Pass had to offer.
