A Dominican Adventure

Every once in a while team Perropro decides to go on adventures.

On the road, the skateboard becomes a tool that goes beyond the freestyle; it becomes a device for discovery. There is a big difference between being a tourist and a traveler. Seeking adventures through skateboarding brings you to the real experience of enjoying a new culture from the inside.

Skateboarding is a language that transcends cultures and breaks barriers no matter where in the world you are. Like the backpacker with a guitar the skateboard creates conversations without the need for words.

Bruno is currently living in the Caribbean Islands working on an ecological project helping to reverse the neglect for our environment. Camilo and Alberto traveled from Columbia and Los Angeles respectively to join Bruno on his quest and to learn about his mission.

This is the story of 3 friends that exploring the wild and beautiful region of Samana. A place full of exotic vegetation and wonderful locals always smiling and willing to help with a broken motorbike. Often in awe, the locals saw a totally new way to interact with their tiny town.

Featuring the Orangatang Onsen (58mm, 100a) and prototype hybrid wheels.

The 101 South - Episode 3 - Mexico from surfstitch on Vimeo.
As surfers, we are always dreaming of finding that next epic surf spot... A place where the waves are always perfect, and the pressures and monotony of life simply don't exist. And, for us Aussie surfers, there's a certain romantic appeal to that stretch from booming California to uncharted Mexico.

In this episode, we follow Jack Lynch down the 101 with his mates Nate Foster and Alex Knost, searching for perfect surf and, dare we say, finding it!

Bruce Brown | Part One

Bruce Brown, Part One from The Surfer's Journal on Vimeo.
Quietly dwelling in a hidden arroyo near Santa Barbara (and in striking distance of his favorite ranchland surf spot) Brown spends his days with family and his collection of motorized hobby projects.

Bruce Brown aw-shucks his way through every interview he’s ever sat for. He leaves it for others to list his accomplishments and influence. If you’ve read the Bruce features in TSJ, you know the bullet points: Oscar-nominated director of The Endless Summer; commercial sword fisherman; pillar of the apocryphal Dana Point Mafia. And, like a tagline from a Dos Equis commercial, Steve McQueen was his desert racing wingman.

For this episode of POV, filmmaker Chris Malloy—no slouch himself in the surf-and-turf arts—sits a spell with the legendary lensman. Discussion turns quickly from the predictable and into the details of early bootstraps surf filmmaking.

Charming, self-effacing, and as real as they come, we hope you enjoy this two-part portrait of the master.

"Day Glo,
Chrome window,
Shapes in the clouds,
the hungry shoosh for miles around,
upstream, jumpin' out of the water,
gills in the air,
I got many people to thank,
but I can't write letters,
I can't write letters.

My friends on the edge of the old graveyard,
they sit on an old grey porch,
and watch foxes play,
and juggle wine,
the kind of wine that you don't mind spillin',
that you don't mind spillin'.

Well I fill out the forms and I make my death come slowly.
One at a time some kind of record unrollin'.
'You best begin sometime,' she said, 'but you can't start until you're ready.'
Yet it seemed to be controlled,
somehow bowed her fingernails, eyelashes and all the essential parts.
We talk about dreams a lot.
She reads our fortunes out loud,
I think it's funny and I go stay with her,
and I go stay with her,
and I don't mind dyin',
when I make love to her,
to her, to her.
Day Glo.

Under a wall of sound,
a riverbed of clay,
the distance between us stays,
close, but not close,
far, but not too far,
away.
Close, but not close,
far, but not too far,
away.

Day Glo."

FISH FRY 2015

FISH FRY 2015 from Deus ex Machina on Vimeo.
The Deus Fish Fry in Bali: a day for the young, the old and every age in between. The event is all about appreciating and riding a vast array of different surfboards. With an eclectic array of wave riding craft planted on the grassy knoll down at Tugu Beach, board enthusiasts admired and rode through the morning.

The girls and guys alike cross-stepped, trimmed and cut back on short, long, thick and thin surfboards. Once again, we were gifted with perfect surf and weather. The clean and open-faced Tugu walls were wonderful blank canvases for the various styles of riding. Along with the boards we condone sharing waves, stories and laughs.

Over the years we’ve experienced a range of conditions for our event. Whether it’s lake-like, bombing or anywhere in between, the one thing that stays the same is the vibe. And if this video is anything to go by, the vibe was damn good.

Under 9 Foot & Single 2015

Under 9 Foot & Single 2015 from Deus ex Machina on Vimeo.
Busting down the door for our 2nd Under 9’ & Single! In this division at the 9‘ Festival surfers were able to ride anything under 9’ with a single fin. Unsuprisingly the majority of the contestants opted for 70’s style shortboards.

Thrown together in two piles of ten for a half hour each, it was more of an expression session than a contest but waves were judged and finalists were made. In the last 30 minutes of the 5th Annual Deus 9’ & Single Festival, 8 single fin shortboarders traded off perfect waves. Each surfer rode a wave on one set alone… 8 waves for 8 surfers in one set! We couldn’t have asked for more.

Ladies Log Fest 9 Foot & Single 2015

Ladies Log Fest 9 Foot & Single 2015 from Deus ex Machina on Vimeo.
Welcome to the second annual Ladies Log Fest at the Deus 9’ & Single. The Canggu right-hander looked so damn classy with the ladies in the water. The ladies division was a highlight during our event. They shared more waves and stoke than any of the other competitors and though we finished with a winner, the event never once seemed like competition.

9 Foot & Single 2015

9 Foot & Single 2015 from Deus ex Machina on Vimeo.
The men’s 9’ & Single Longboard division… yeeww! What a cracker it was. After a wild start to the event, conditions cleaned up for the final day of this world-renowned longboarding competition. Tyler, Harrison, Thomas and Zye hit the water in bombing and clean Pererenan River Mouth perfection.

Never before considered a longboard wave and rarely ridden by longboarders thanks to the small and competitive line-up, it was a pleasure to watch these four surfers show that heavy single fins aren’t limited to shoulder high surf.

The final started with Harrison riding a bomb from out the back all the way onto the sand. Spectators cheered as he attempted to run off his board and up the beach before tripping and landing flat on his back. From then on it was 30 minutes of non-stop surf, with every competitor riding a handful of over-head waves.

This event reached a new peak in 2015 and every single beachgoer was entertained with world-class longboarding of the like that has previously only been seen on film.

Lyrics

"Don't f**k with me, don't f**k with me
Since you shipped my ass off to sea
I never knew where I was going
I went where the water was flowing

I know I've been gone a long time
I'm back and I want what is mine
I know I've been gone a long time
I'm back and I want what is mine

The ship was the love of my life
We went down together that night
I surfaced and married a shell
For years I just cruised on the run

I know I've been gone a long time
I'm back and I want what is mine
I know I've been gone a long time but
I'm back and I want what is mine

So don't try and fuck me about
The worst thing that happened was
I was standing too close to your heart
I'm tired and about to wake up

I know I've been gone a long time
I'm back and I want what is mine
I know I've been gone a long time but
I'm back and I want what is mine

Oh, I know I've been gone a long time but
I'm back and I want what is mine
I know I've been gone a long time
I'm back and I want what is mine"

Ride It All Out | Deus Ex Machina

Ride It All Out from Deus ex Machina on Vimeo.
When Lewie Dunn mentioned that he wanted to head to Indonesia and spend the dry season chasing surf, Temple shaper Jye Byrnes flooded him with questions... "What kind of waves will you be surfing? What style of boards do you want to be riding? Have you told your girlfriend yet?"

Lewie had a whole list written before he'd even registered the girlfriend question.

In the mix of boards that came as a result of their rendezvous were - a 5'0 split-keel fish - a 5'7 diamond tail quad - a 6'1, 5-fin bonzer - a 6'3 channel bottom single fin - and a 9'3 single fin log. He must have a large board bag.

Anyway, Lewie had been surfing all over the archipelago selecting the right boards for the right conditions, when he thought, why don't I try ride them all in one day? And so he did! This fun little clip details his day spent paddling out and surfing in. His day spent changing boards and screwing and unscrewing fins.

Lewie's surf turned into a kind of marathon (it being much harder physically than he had expected) but damn, doesn't it look like fun?

Fine Surfcraft | Andrew Warhurst

Fine Surfcraft by Andrew Warhurst. The Draught Model from
Fine Surfcraft x Andrew Warhurst on Vimeo.
The Draught Model is available between 8'1" and 10'0" and is a really fun board for bigger waves than what you would ride your "log" in and when you don't feel like riding a shortboard but still performs amazingly in small waves as well. Surf bigger shortboard style waves but draw smooth long lines like you would on a regular longboard in under head high waves. This model is particularly good in the barrel due to its pulled in outline and foiled out rails from nose to tail. Perfect for big reef breaks like Bells Beach and Winkipop, points like Lennox and Angourie and will give it a nudge on any punchy Aussie beach break. ge on any punchy Aussie beach break.

Surfcar Clandestino

Original article by Hangten Magazine!

Take a funeral car and make it a lovely SURFCAR, it only can happen to a disturbed mind like his crazy owner PEPE CLANDESTINO.

Before

After

Pepe and the Clandestino car.

Pepe - "It has always haunted me the world of old American cars, woodies and 50-60 surfers cars and most of them agree on one thing, the round headlights. When I first saw the Clandestino 124, I freaked out, had round headlights, a part of the body in glass, with all the back to look a bit as if it were "supersonic". It was all a Spanish car, classic, rare and that was a challenge but at that time was the essence of the American Surf Hearses".

The original car is a Seat 124 family series with a funeral bodywork, registed in 1973 by the Mirsan  Funeral Company.

I already said I was a little crazy.

This gem and its owner will be in the next MOTORBEACH FESTIVAL that take place in Asturias, Spain on the penultimate weekend of July, sure to be one of the sensations of the event.

Pepe is also the owner of the brand "Clandestino Surf Clothing", come to take a look it will surprise you.

If you have a van or a surfcar and would like to appear on HangTen, email us at hangtenrevistalongboard@gmail.com.

Cyrus Sutton Wants Everyone to Become a Filmmaker | The Inertia

Cyrus Sutton is many things. A surfer. A storyteller. A filmmaker. An activist. It's his dynamic, healthy skepticism of the status quo and profound dedication to change that make him a visionary in the canon of contemporary surf personalities. Currently, he's producing a new film called Island Earth that explores the world's food supply. You can bet that it will inspire you to take your food – and the way you choose to spend your cash in supporting business – just a little more seriously. And that's a good thing.

PROUT

PROUT - Un film de Raymond Campbielle from Surfinestate on Vimeo.
Clovis Donizetti (France) spreading world of classics, with his guitar and board.
Just a little ballade, around melody and surfing, next to Biarritz.

This parodic title (prout mean fart in French) is also a wink to this mental surf film "SPROUT" directed by Thomas Campbell in 2004 where Joel Tudor, Dan Malloy or Dave Rastovitch called to mind of all surfers that surfing wasn't just performance but also an art of living and a game.

---------------------------------------------------

Devon Howard longboarding - NSW, Australia from Devon Howard on Vimeo.
While traveling down the east coast of Australia (March, 2015) I met a local surfing legend who also films surfing for fun. He captured two sessions of mine in his home town over a one day period. A few months later an edited DVD he made showed up in my mailbox. So here it is. No color correction, and the quality is a bit grainy. ... The board I am on is a brand new Thomas Surfboards built by Thomas Bexon of Noosa. I'd only ridden it one other time prior. Needless to say it went well and I had a ball this day. Thanks to Patagonia for making the trip possible, as well as the outstanding hospitality from my pals Glen & Cathy Casey, Thomas & Kim Bexon, Matt Chojnacki, Eden Saul, The Salty Merchant and Nathan Oldfield. Enjoy. - @devon_howard

The skateboard maker

The skateboard maker from ABC Open Gold Coast on Vimeo.
Have you ever had the urge to chuck in your day job and just do the thing you love.

Well that is exactly what Palm Beach man Jimmy Kakanis did about two years ago when he took up skateboard making full time.

The idea came to Jimmy and a friend when they were having trouble finding the perfect board to skate downhill, so they decided to make their own.

Jimmy wasn't deterred by his lack of knowledge on the skateboard-making process and quickly learned the fundamentals from watching numerous Youtube videos.

He now has the process for skateboard-making down to a fine art while still maintaining his own unique style.

Priding himself on each board becoming a unique one-off shape and pattern is what makes Jimmy's boards different from everyone else's.

His use of fabric to decorate the deck is his big point of difference.

Originally sourcing recycled fabrics from op shops in recent months the process has evolved into Jimmy creating his own graphics from drawings and having those printed on cotton.

Skateboarding is a huge subculture on the Gold Coast and Jimmy is a passionate man trying to make his mark on the industry with his own sense of style.
